Props

Focus this week has shifted to modeling the props, namely the plant matter in the treehouse scene. My intial design for the seed turned out not to be as Wanru had envisioned, though it may be used in other parts of the production. The sproat is an important story element in the film, and I have begun to model that and the leaves of the plants.

Treehouse Modeling, Props, and Old Man

Lots of progress this week in terms of the overall production of assets. I have modeled and begun to lay out the UVs of the treehouse, adding a displacement map from Mudbox to give the tree texture.
Prop design is also progressing, with the creation of a better shelf and a bottle.
Finally, the UVs for the Old Man have been completely laid out, and texturing has begun.

 Treehouse Modeling

This weeks focus was beginning the treehouse environment for this project. The basic starting point for the tree was a Paint Effects tree that was converted into polygons. This sped up the process considerably as the main components of a tree (main truck, branches) came built in and only has to be manipulated to suit our needs.

Finish Model & UV Layout, Prop Design

The overall modeling of the Old Man is finished, save for some minor tweaks requested by Wanru on Monday. Fixing and reducing some of the edge loops of his clothing was suggested, along with adding more detail around the knees. Also, Wanru requested an inner mouth for the character for his limited facial animation.

The UV layout is also mostly complete.

Finally, I've begun modeling some of the props. This week I also should be starting on the overall environment a well.

Modeling

Modeling the Old Man is nearing completion, with the majority of work this week focusing on hair and clothing. Polygons are being used to create simple hair pieces, and extrusions will create more realistic shagginess. Articles of clothing were extracted from the main mesh, which will help in the future animation phase. His feet have also made progress, though the toes need some additional tweaking as they look a bit too reptilian.

Project Description

This project revolves around two characters, a young girl and an old man, wandering around a dystopian world were everything is in decay and ruin. It involves environmental and prop design, and lighting is a very important factor. Particular focus will be paid to the details of small props, which the characters will interact with.

About the Client

Wanru is from SOFA and now a third year grad concentrating lighting and shading. Her focus was animation in her first and second year in grad school and finally chose her concentration last summer. She is preparing a lighting and texturing portfolio and learning composting in Nuke.

My Understanding

We found the setting and environments of this project to be very interesting. Stephanie and I are 3d modelers, and the necessities of this project should definitely be withing the realms of our abilities to meet. One of the main locations of the project, the tree house, reminded me personally of other examples of tree houses in other media, especially of those featured in the webcomic Homestuck. The lighting aspect of the project will also be important, as well as the texturing of the set pieces and props. Wanru has suggested that we learn Z-Brush to help with texture mapping and sculpting, and I am taking 3D Lighting this quarter, which will aid in the lighting process. I believe that we will be able to add a certain level of realism to the textures and create a sense of decay that should surpass Wanru's expectations, along with strong modeling.
